Mixing engineers who want a track to feel more open without a fight reach for this one. Two knobs, no fluff.
Mid Air — pushes upper-mid frequencies forward so a vocal or snare sits right on top of a dense mix without sounding harsh.
High Air — opens up the very top end, adding the kind of shine that makes a master bus feel wider and a hi-hat breathe.
Trim — a simple output level knob to keep your gain staging honest after the processing.
Slate built it from old exciter circuits and modern dynamic processing, so it works on a single keyboard track or across an entire mix. It is a focused tool. You set two dials, maybe nudge the trim, and get back to the music.
Start with these settings
Out of the box, both knobs sit at zero and nothing happens. Move one, and you hear the change immediately. The first thing I do after loading it on a vocal bus is pull Mid Air up to about 15 and leave High Air at 10. That little bump in presence lands right where consonants live, so lyrics cut through a wall of guitars without turning sibilant. Then I walk away for a minute and come back. If the top end feels like it is reaching for attention rather than just sitting there, I back High Air down to 7 or 8.
On a drum bus, start with the two controls linked. Click the little chain icon so both move together, set them around 12, and toggle the plugin on and off while the whole kit plays. Cymbals open up and the snare crack gets a nice snap. If the overheads start sounding fizzy, unlink and pull High Air back a few notches while keeping Mid Air up. The trim knob is your friend here — those boosted highs add perceived level, so dip the output a couple dB to compare fairly.
For a master bus, less is more. I rarely push either knob past 8. You want the mix to feel a little taller, not brightened into a smiley-face EQ curve. Link the controls at 6 or 7, listen for a full verse and chorus, then bypass. If the difference feels like someone cleaned a window rather than turned on a light, you are in the right spot.
Double-click to reset any knob instantly
- Double-click resets a knob to zero. Faster than dragging, and you do not have to be precise.
- The link button remembers your offset. If Mid Air is at 20 and High Air at 14, linking them keeps that spread as you adjust — useful once you find a ratio you like on a particular source.
- Trim works post-processing. It is not an input gain; it tames the output after the exciter circuit does its thing. If you are hitting a compressor next in the chain, this matters.
- It plays well before or after EQ. Try it after a broad high-shelf boost for a different flavor, or before to let the exciter hand off to more surgical moves.
Transients stay punchy with dynamic air
Does this thing shred transients? No. The dynamic processing inside Fresh Air reacts to the signal rather than just slapping on a static curve. A snare hit stays punchy; the air rides on top instead of softening the attack. People hunting for a Fresh Air torrent usually wonder about this — cheap exciters can turn a transient into mush, but this one keeps the snap intact.
Will it work without a dongle? Yes. Machine activation and iLok Cloud are both supported, so you are not forced to keep a USB key plugged in. That matters if you are on a laptop and moving between rooms.
Is it only for vocals? Not at all. I have seen it used on dull piano recordings, synth pads that needed to float above a bassline, and even a whole mix where the high end just needed a gentle lift. Some folks who grab a fresh air mac torrent think it is a one-trick vocal sparkle box, then end up sprinkling it across half the session.
Does it pile on latency? Negligible. You can track through it if your buffer is reasonable, and it will not bring a busy mixing session to its knees. On an Apple Silicon machine, it barely registers on the CPU meter even with a dozen instances.
- macOS 11 or newer
- Apple Silicon native support
Questions I actually get
What does the Mid Air knob do on Fresh Air?
Mid Air controls upper-mid frequencies to add presence and bring a source forward, which works well on vocals, drums, and keys.
Can I use Fresh Air on my full mix bus?
Yes, Slate Digital says it is designed for both individual tracks and the master bus, where the High Air knob can add a gentle top-end openness.
What is the difference between the High Air and Mid Air controls?
Mid Air adds presence in the upper-mid frequencies, while High Air controls the higher frequencies to add shine and a sense of air without a complicated EQ curve.
