Total War: WARHAMMER II is a strategy game where you run an empire on a turn-based map and then fight the battles in real time. The sequel to Total War: WARHAMMER, it drops you into the New World and hands you a faction, a starting province, and a list of enemies.

March armies, build cities, fight battles

  • Move armies and agents across the campaign map, one turn at a time
  • Build up cities, recruit units, and manage global politics with other factions
  • Fight real-time battles when armies meet, positioning units and issuing orders
  • Play network battles against other people

Mostly campaign map until a battle interrupts

Most of your time goes into the campaign layer. You read the map, plan a move, hit end turn, and react to what the AI does. When a battle starts, the pace changes completely. You zoom down, arrange your infantry, cavalry and monsters, and watch the fight play out in real time.

Civ-style turns, then real-time combat

If you've played Civilization VI, you know the turn-based campaign flow, but Total War: WARHAMMER II adds a real-time combat layer that Civ never touches. In Civ, a fight is a quick animation and a numbers check. Here, you zoom into the field and command every unit. It's a different kind of time commitment — a full campaign can run fifty hours or more.

Company of Heroes 2 gives you tight squad tactics and a World War II setting, but it skips the empire management entirely. You jump from mission to mission with no overworld map to shape. WARHAMMER II asks you to think about province income, diplomacy, and army logistics between battles. It's the difference between running a kitchen and planning the menu for the whole year.

Against Stellaris, the scale flips. Stellaris is grand strategy with pause-and-play space battles. WARHAMMER II keeps the camera close, the unit rosters varied, and the combat hands-on. If you want to watch a dragon rout a line of spearmen instead of reading a combat report, this is your game.

Rushing every battle loses campaigns

New players often treat every battle like a rush to clash lines. That works against early AI stacks, but it falls apart fast. Here are the habits that cost you campaigns:

  • Ignoring magic and abilities. A well-placed spell can break an elite unit before it reaches your front line. Clicking the flashy button too late or never at all is the number one way to lose winnable fights.
  • Expanding too fast. Grabbing settlements without the economy to defend them spreads your one good army thin. Public order tanks, rebellions pop, and a neighbor declares war while you're out of position.
  • Neglecting the campaign layer. It's tempting to treat the overworld as a menu between battles, but trade agreements, hero actions, and building chains decide the war before the first charge.

Getting the Mac version running

The download total war warhammer ii for mac route is straightforward if you have an Intel machine with the specs to handle it. Unpack the archive, move the contents to Applications, and launch from Launchpad. The current build — version 1.0.12 fix — runs on macOS 11.3 or later and wants 60 GB of free space. That's a big ask, so clear room before you start.
