EZkeys 2 shows up as an AU instrument inside Logic, Ableton Live, and other Mac DAWs. It also runs as a standalone app, so you can play and sketch ideas without opening a full session. The current build is a universal binary — it runs natively on both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs from macOS 10.13 onward.

Find a playing style

The included MIDI library is played by real pianists, covering everything from pop ballad arpeggios to gospel runs. Tap2Find lets you tap a rhythm on a key and get back matching patterns — useful when you know the feel but not the notes.

Shape the sound

Mix-ready presets cover a broad palette right out of the box, from bright modern pop to warm, felt-damped upright tones. The engine handles multiple cores better on Mac now, so layering parts and switching sounds stays snappy.

Get comfortable the first few days

When I installed 2.1.5, I spent the first afternoon just scrolling presets and playing. That's fine — the Fazioli sample is a pleasure. But the real speed-up comes after you tell the browser where your own chord progressions live. Drag a few MIDI files into the user library so Tap2Find and Bandmate have something to work from besides the factory patterns.

Three things I wish I'd done on day one:

  • Resize the window to fit your screen before you build any muscle memory for where the tabs sit. The scalable interface stretches cleanly on a 27-inch display, and the Chord Wheel stays readable at any size.
  • Set the standalone app's audio output to your interface, not the built-in speakers. EZkeys remembers the setting per machine, so you only do this once.
  • Load a MIDI pack you didn't buy for — a blues pack over a ballad progression, for instance. The mismatch often produces the accident that turns into a verse.

If you grabbed the toontrack ezkeys 2 core library from a ezkeys free download mac package, the factory content installs separately from the application. Make sure both pieces landed in the right folders before you assume a sound is missing.

Small things you'll overlook until you don't

The transport controls work with the spacebar even when EZkeys isn't the focused window — handy when you're editing lyrics in another app and want to replay a section. Right-clicking any chord in the Chord Wheel copies its MIDI data to the clipboard; paste it straight into your DAW's piano roll.

Songwriting Scales highlights the notes that belong to the current key right on the keyboard. I ignored it for weeks, then used it to fix a bridge where I'd wandered into harmonic nonsense. The scale highlighting is subtle — a faint color wash on the keys — so it doesn't feel like training wheels.

If you're working from a ezkeys torrent or ez keys torrent, check that the MIDI packs actually registered inside the browser. Sometimes the files are present but the database hasn't scanned them. Open the MIDI browser, click the refresh icon, and give it thirty seconds.

Four-second cold launch on Apple Silicon

On an Apple Silicon Mac, the standalone app launches in about four seconds cold. Inside Logic as an AU, it adds maybe a second to project load times. I've run it alongside three instances of Superior Drummer and a string library without the fan spinning up — the multi-core improvement in 2.1.5 is genuine, not a line in the release notes.

Memory sits around 800 MB for the core grand piano with close mics loaded. Switching to an ambient preset bumps that a little, but I've never seen it cross 1.2 GB. The disk image from an ezkeys 2 torrent is substantial — the samples aren't small — but once everything's in place, the streaming is smooth. No clicks, no dropouts at a 128-sample buffer.

Stability has been uneventful, which is the best kind. I've crashed it exactly once, and that was while hot-swapping an audio interface mid-playback — a scenario most people won't stumble into. For everyday writing and arranging, it just sits there and works.
