What’s actually in the box? The MyPLAYER career path lets you earn shoes, outfits and tattoos by completing quests — small goals that nudge you forward. A new badge system tracks your progression, so you feel the climb. The Greatest mode puts 2024-2025 NBA superstars on the floor, while Association lets you act as both general manager and head coach: trades, rotations, the whole front-office headache. For something looser, Blacktop delivers real-time 3-on-3 streetball with a friend, and the Neighborhood now mixes an indoor MyCOURT with outdoor streetball courts. A simple Quick Match gives you a 5-on-5 NBA game when you just want to play. It’s a generous slice of the series, trimmed to fit a Mac.
Two things tend to trip people up early. The first is the badge system — it’s easy to spread points thin and end up with a player who’s okay at everything but not sharp anywhere. Pick a lane for the first ten hours: shooting, playmaking, or defense. Quests that grant badge points follow your play style, so leaning into one direction early pays off. The second snag is The Neighborhood layout. If you can’t find the outdoor courts, look for the asphalt strip near the MyCOURT entrance — the game doesn’t signpost it well. Invites for Blacktop work through Game Center, so make sure you’re signed in before trying to pull a friend into a 3-on-3 game.
Tighter hoop dreams than the console
Does it feel undercooked compared to the console version? It’s a tighter package, not a stripped skeleton. You lose some of the city-size free-roam and microtransaction noise, but the career mode, Association management, and streetball all feel substantial.
Can I play offline? Mostly. MyCAREER, Association, and Quick Match work fine without a connection. Blacktop with a friend and anything that pulls Apple Music need a network.
Version 1.80 fix opens up the Neighborhood so indoor MyCOURT and outdoor streetball courts live side by side. MyPLAYER progression gets a new badge system, and The Greatest mode has been freshened up.
