Dead Island is a third-person action game that drops you into a zombie quarantine in Los Angeles after the army has pulled out. The Mac release is published as the Ultimate Edition, so you get the whole package in one go.

Six survivors, two expansions, and co-op chaos

  • Six playable characters, each with their own traits and dialogue.
  • The full base campaign set in a quarantined LA.
  • The Haus expansion and the SoLA expansion.
  • Co-op multiplayer with platform-specific matchmaking.
  • Customizable abilities so you can tune your slayer to your style.

City-wide rampage with six distinct voices

You pick one of the six characters and work through a city that’s been sealed off and left to rot. Every character brings different lines and a different feel, so a second run with a new face doesn’t feel like the same tape playing again. You can tweak abilities as you go, and if you want company, the co-op mode lets you bring a friend along—just know that matchmaking sticks to your platform.

Tighter rampage without the parkour

If you’ve spent time with Dying Light, you know Techland’s parkour-heavy take on the apocalypse. Dead Island shares some DNA—visceral melee, weapon mods, that same gleeful crunch when a bat connects—but it trades free-running for a tighter, more guided rampage through LA’s sun-scorched neighborhoods. Dying Light asks you to climb and flee; Dead Island mostly asks you to stand your ground and get creative with what’s in your hands.

Resident Evil 4 on Mac is a different animal. It’s third-person, sure, and it has its share of infected bodies, but the pacing is deliberate, almost surgical. Dead Island runs louder and looser. Where RE4 wants you to manage every bullet, Dead Island wants you to grab a sledgehammer, electrify it, and see how many zombs you can send flying before the battery dies. It’s a party, not a puzzle box.

Against something like World War Z, the difference comes down to scale. WWZ throws swarms at you and leans on squad tactics. Dead Island keeps the chaos personal—smaller groups, but each zombie has its own mutation and attack pattern. You’re not mowing down a CGI river of bodies; you’re reading a room and picking which freak to drop first.

A quick solo run through Beverly Hills

Here’s a workflow I fell into on a lazy Sunday, playing as Amy. Start by clearing out a mansion’s ground floor—pulling zombies toward the doorway so you don’t get flanked. Loot the kitchen drawers for crafting parts, then head upstairs where the real prizes hide: a workbench and usually a locked chest.

  1. Scope the garden from the balcony. Spot the shamblers, the runner, and one big guy with a spiked arm. Make a mental note of the oil drum near the fence.
  2. Craft a shock mod for your cleaver. The workbench has what you need if you grabbed copper wire from the garage. Electric damage stuns the big guy just long enough.
  3. Kite the runner first. Toss a firecracker near the oil drum, wait for the group to cluster, then pop the drum with a throwing knife. That thins the crowd before you jump down.
  4. Clean up with the cleaver. The shocked state on the big zombie gives you a five-second window to aim for the legs. Once it kneels, a head stomp finishes it.
  5. Sweep the pool house. The quiet after the fight is your moment to grab the collectible on the diving board and hit the fast-travel map on the cabana wall.

The whole loop—scout, craft, bait, brawl—takes about fifteen minutes and plays out a little differently every time depending on which mutation variants show up. That’s where the game earns its replay. You’re not memorizing spawn points; you’re reading behavior.
