This one's for the dungeon-crawler who remembers graph paper and THAC0, or the newer player who wants to see where modern RPGs got their teeth. You step into the worn boots of a adventurer marked by a dark god's blood, wrestling with a fate you never asked for. It's a game about resisting the monster you could become, set across a sprawling land where every shadowy corner holds a conversation, a trap, or a lich who's having a very bad century.
Shadows of Amn, Throne of Bhaal, and new companions
- The complete Shadows of Amn campaign and its epic Throne of Bhaal conclusion.
- A fresh character to recruit and brand-new quests woven into the original story.
- Engine improvements that let the hand-painted backgrounds shine on modern displays without a fight.
Mac performance and controls
Beamdog built this edition for both Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, so there's no Rosetta translation layer getting in the way on an M-series machine. I've seen the game tested on an M4 Mac mini under macOS Tahoe, and it runs like a well-oiled hinge—smooth scrolling, instant area loads, and none of the stutter that plagued the original CD-ROM era. The real-time-with-pause combat maps naturally to a mouse and keyboard, though you'll want a proper two-button mouse for all those right-click context menus. Trackpad warriors, plan accordingly.
Build a party whose banter makes you grin
Don't rush the main quest. Irenicus can wait. Use those early hours to build a party that clicks—kick out the companions who grate on you and hunt down the ones whose banter makes you grin. The game rewards curiosity more than speed.
- Save on different slots. Not just quicksave. The city opens up fast after the dungeon, and you'll want a fallback point before any major decision or ambush.
- Learn the autopause triggers. Under gameplay options you can set the game to pause when an enemy is sighted, a trap is found, or a spell is cast. It turns chaos into something you can actually read.
- Stock up on scroll cases and gem bags. Inventory Tetris is not the adventure you signed up for. Buy containers early from the first merchants you meet.
Shortcuts nobody tells you about
A few keystrokes that save more clicks than you'd think:
- Tab highlights every interactable object on screen—doors, containers, loose loot. Tap it constantly.
- Spacebar pauses and unpauses. You know this one, but pairing it with autopause triggers makes fights feel like chess instead of a bar brawl.
- 1 through 6 select your party members in order. Combine with Shift to grab multiple characters fast.
- Hold right-click on an enemy to see what buffs and protections they're wearing. The game never explains this, but it's the difference between a wasted spell and a clean kill.
One more thing: the quick-loot bar sits at the bottom of the screen, easy to ignore. When you kill a dragon and its hoard spills everywhere, that bar is faster than clicking every pile. Muscle memory takes a session or two, then it becomes second nature.
A new face joins the party, and with them come fresh quests to tackle. This release also bundles the complete saga—both the Shadows of Amn campaign and the Throne of Bhaal expansion—in one clean package.
- macOS Tahoe (tested) or recent compatible version
- Apple Silicon (M-series) or Intel Mac
