If your drive is filling up with copies of the same project, presentation, or photo library, Hyperspace is built for you. It doesn't just flag look-alike filenames—it compares what's inside the files to find true duplicates across any folders you point it at. And when it cleans up, it leans on a smart macOS trick that leaves your files exactly where they are while giving back the space.

What it does What you need
Finds identical-content files macOS 15 or later
Reclaims space using APFS clones English interface

A good first move is to aim it at your home folder and let it scan. When it shows you the duplicates, it replaces the extra copies with space-saving clones—the same lightweight pointers Finder creates when you duplicate a file. The originals stay put, and you get the storage back without rearranging your whole filing system.

When a photographer runs out of working space

Picture a wedding photographer coming home from a long weekend shoot. She imports the RAWs onto her MacBook, makes a backup copy on an external drive, and later copies selects into a “client proofs” folder. Without realizing it, she’s sitting on three copies of several hundred 45-megabyte files. Her internal drive drops to 12 GB free, Lightroom starts crawling, and she’s not sure which copies are safe to delete.

She points Hyperspace at her Pictures folder and the external drive together. Ten minutes later she’s staring at a list of genuine duplicates—same pixel-for-pixel content, different folder paths. She lets Hyperspace clone them down. The RAWs stay in all three places, Finder shows the same file names, but the space eaten by the duplicates goes back into her free pool. Lightroom snaps back to normal speed, and she gets back to culling instead of playing disk janitor.

What’s new in the 1.8 release

Hyperspace 1.8 sharpens a few things that matter when you use it often. Scanning speed on deep folder trees got a bump—particularly noticeable if you’re running it against a multi-terabyte external drive with tens of thousands of files. The clone operation also handles edge cases around certain cloud-sync folders more gracefully now; files managed by services that don’t play well with APFS cloning are flagged clearly instead of silently skipped.

Day-to-day, the biggest change is that the results list keeps your sort order after a reclaim run, so you don’t have to re-sort to see what’s left. It’s the kind of small fix you appreciate the third time you use it in a week.

Questions I actually get

How does Hyperspace free up space without deleting my files?

It replaces duplicate files with APFS clones, which are lightweight references that share the same data on disk while looking and acting like normal files.

Can I search more than one folder at a time?

Yes, you can point Hyperspace at one or more folders and it will compare contents across all of them to find exact duplicates.

Does Hyperspace work on older versions of macOS?

No, it requires macOS 15 or later to use the latest file system capabilities.
