King's Bounty II puts you in charge of a small force that grows into a proper army, one turn-based fight at a time.

Minute to minute, you are walking the roads of Antara, talking to people, picking up tasks, and deciding which fights are worth taking. Before a battle starts, you set up your army on a grid. Then the fight itself is pure turn-based tactics: move a squad, position it well, pick a target, watch the damage play out. Between battles you recruit soldiers from the places you have helped, which changes what your army can actually do on the field. The three heroes offer different starting points, so a second playthrough does not feel like the same walk twice.

I fired up a fresh campaign as Aivar, the warrior, just to see how the early hours flow on my M3. After the opening cutscene, you are dropped into a muddy crossroads with a handful of guards and a rough idea of where trouble is brewing. I spent the first twenty minutes poking around farmsteads, chatting to villagers who mostly wanted someone to clear out the wolves in the east field. That first skirmish is a tutorial in everything but name — four spearmen, a healer, and a patch of high ground that teaches you elevation bonuses the hard way when an enemy archer parks himself up there.

From there the rhythm settles in. You ride to a mission marker, scout the enemy formation before committing, then spend five or ten minutes on the grid. One fight I remember clearly: a bandit camp tucked behind a river. I placed my shield unit on the bridge to bottleneck them, kept my crossbowmen two hexes back on a hillock, and let the enemy waste two turns wading through water while I picked them apart. After the victory screen, I looted a decent chestplate, recruited two sellswords from the newly friendly camp, and headed north with a slightly fatter army. That is the loop — explore, decide, deploy, collect — and it rarely rushes you.

Gatekeeper complaints block the first launch

The common stumbles are not about the tactics; they are about getting the game to start cleanly. The Wineskin wrapper does the heavy lifting, but sometimes macOS throws up a gatekeeper complaint on the first double-click. If you see an error about a damaged app, do not delete it. Open the disk image again and run the small repair file sitting next to the game icon. That resets the permissions and the launch goes through fine on the second try.

Another thing: save files live in a tucked-away spot inside the app bundle, at Kings Bounty II.app/Contents/SharedSupport/prefix/drive_c/users/Sikarugir/AppData/Local/KingsBounty2. If you ever need to back them up before reinstalling, that is the folder to grab. A few folks also report stuttering during the first large battle with magic effects flying around. Dropping the shadow quality one notch usually smooths it out without making the game look flat.

Questions I actually get

Where are the game saves for King's Bounty II kept?

Saves live under Kings Bounty II.app/Contents/SharedSupport/prefix/drive_c/users/Sikarugir/AppData/Local/KingsBounty2.
