The map pins show you exactly where you are, but the bench icons matter more. That's where you catch your breath after a long stretch of dodging corrupted bugs through dripping stone corridors. Team Cherry built a ruined underground kingdom that doesn't hand you a tour guide. You earn every new screen by surviving what's on it.
Thrives on getting lost and earning every victory
- You like getting lost and finding your own way out.
- A boss that crushes you ten times feels like a lesson, not a chore.
- Atmosphere matters more than a straight story. The quiet, crumbling city tells you enough.
Who bounces off
If you want clear quest markers or a gentle ride, this isn't your game. It's slow, precise, and expects you to learn enemy patterns the hard way. You'll retrace your steps often. For the right player, that weight is the whole point.
Your first few hours underground
Don't rush to fill in the map. Cornifer's humming leads you to him in each area, but until you buy his charts you're drawing blind. Many new players panic-buy the compass charm and never take it off. Try removing it after a few hours — you'll be surprised how much of the kingdom you've already memorized.
Save your Geo early. That first lantern from Sly costs 1800 and it's not optional if you want to reach dark corridors without hugging walls. Sell relics to Lemm in the City of Tears when you need a cash injection, not before. He pays better than a random merchant.
Mistakes that sting
- Slashing everything on sight. Some bugs aren't hostile. Hit the wrong NPC and you'll lose a shopkeeper or a quest line for the whole run.
- Ignoring the downward slash. Hold down and strike while airborne. It bounces you off spikes, enemies, and crumbling armor. The game teaches it once and never reminds you again.
- Hoarding charm notches. You can't equip what you can't slot. Buy every notch Salubra sells — charm combinations win fights faster than raw nail upgrades.
- Fleeing from a shade. After death, your shade holds your Geo. If you die again before reclaiming it, that Geo's gone. Hunt it down first, or use Confessor Jiji in Dirtmouth if it spawned somewhere awful.
One more thing: the hollow knight for mac cracked searches you see floating around often point to builds that still include the full DLC suite. The DRM-free release from Team Cherry already packs in Hidden Dreams, The Grimm Troupe, Lifeblood, and Godmaster — no extra downloads needed.
- macOS (ARM and 64-bit x86)
